Even a dreary government building can be turned into a designer home - as long as you avoid the clichés. Jane Collins and her husband, Steven, were the first civilian inhabitants of a 1830s mock-Palladian former embassy building, which had been divided into three units. Downstairs doubled in size when Collins bought the next-door flat and knocked through, creating a glass extension and two extra bedrooms.
