You may well ask why a couple who so vehemently dislike Victorian terraced houses chose to buy one, only to convert it into an uncompromisingly modern home. True, they kept the old staircases, but the soaring double-height space of the living room doesn't, whichever way you look at it, say conventional terraced house. The Beckers' priority was creating a sense of space, and to this end, they enlisted the architect Richard Found. "I've lived in apartments, so I wasn't sure about living in such a verticle space," say Dietrich, "but Richard has created great vistas from the basement to the living room." Writer Dominic Lutyens
