3498 - The Retreat

If you were looking for somewhere to get away from it all, where better than a remote cottage down the aptly named Hidden Road in the unspoilt Scottish countryside? Lindsay Taylor and Drew Plunkett’s holiday house, 75 miles from Glasgow and set firmly in the “un-touristy” part of Dumfries and Galloway, is so far off the beaten track that it’s a task to reach even in a four-wheel drive. But that’s just the way Taylor, a lecturer on digital print at Central St Martins College in London, and Plunkett, head of Interior design at the Glasgow School of Art, like it, and they decamp here the moment term finishes. Taylor, a keen gardener, bought the stone cottage and adjacent cow shed and piggery 13 years ago, attracted by the acres of untamed outdoor space. For eight years they lived by candlelight and the heat from open fires. But eventually they wired the house, installed a wood-burning stove and put an Aga in the kitchen.
