From the outside, designer Niki Jones’s building is a dead ringer for the New York brownstone Carrie Bradshaw called home in Sex and the City. But we’re a long way from the Upper East Side here. In fact, we’re in the West End of Glasgow, a neighbourhood somewhat thin on the go-getting glamour of NYC, but one that can hold its own when it comes to impressive architecture. You can barely turn around here for elegant crescents of classical villas and blocks of superior tenements, designed by luminaries such as Alexander “Greek” Thomson, Charles Wilson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This particular house is part of a handsome red sandstone terrace, complete with glittery black cast-iron railings hemming its front garden. Jones and her young son, Gilli, who’s 5, live in the basement apartment. Writer Ruth Corbett
