We are led to believe that fairies live in dells or fern-filled forests, but this Emerald Faerie is to be found high up in an East London tower block, overlooking the Bow flyover. That is where contemporary lighting designer Fiona Gall bases her business, named in a haze of Czech absinthe on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall during the solar eclipse of 1999. At her workshop in a nearby Bow Arts Trust unit, she weaves her magic with fire and glass, wire and fuses, making extraordinary lights and chandeliers as well as fine filigree jewellery. Chandeliers made from Italian ashtrays, junk-shop chaise longues – how one designer transformed her East End tower-block flat.
