In 1930, Patrick Gwynne, then a 24 year old architect proposed demolishing his family’s home and replacing it with a modernist house of his own design. I sold the idea from breakfast to dinner says Patrick. He had fallen in love with modernist architecture: it seemed to me the only way to things at the time. The movement that had seized Patrick’s imagination used the latest building technology reinforced concrete and the ability to make glass in large panes to create light, open interiors. Work began on the new house in 1937. Since it was finished in September 1939, just after war was declared, the family did not have long to enjoy the result.
